Pleasantville Appalachia Service Project

2008 is the 10th year of our involvement
with the Appalachia Service Project!

This summer we plan to send 28 volunteers to Logan County, West Virginia for a week-long home repair trip to make homes warmer, safer and drier

The Presbyterian Church oversees the Pleasantville Appalachia Service Project volunteer program. Each summer we send youth and adult volunteers to Central Appalachia for a week-long home-repair ministry. In 2007, our volunteer group prepared for the mission trip through various local community service projects. We then traveled to Clinchco, Virginia, near the Kentucky border, where we spent a week repairing and rebuilding homes as part of the ASP home repair ministry.

While the Presbyterian Church oversees and organizes the mission, we welcome volunteers from across the community. Most of our volunteers are high-school aged. Youth volunteers must be at least 15 years old and must have finished ninth grade to be eligible to participate.

The ASP mission is much more than just a "trip." We do local community service, skill-building, team-building, sensitivity training and fundraising during the school year. The summer mission trip and the activities leading up to it are opportunities for personal growth as well as spiritual growth.

Each spring, our volunteers prepare for the mission trip by:

  • Developing construction skills: In May 2007 our group spent a day working at a house in Mount Kisco that is owned by the local charity A-Home, refinishing a porch, building an exterior railing, replacing some shingles, and re-tiling a bathroom;

  • Running the Pleasantville Day Community Pancake Breakfast fundraiser;

  • Raising additional funds to finance the mission trip.

It costs about $700 to send each volunteer to Appalachia. A big part of that cost goes to ASP, Inc., which purchases the building materials we use to repair people's homes.
