Who We Are
Pleasantville Presbyterian Church is a Christian community grounded in faith, hope, and love. We are a diverse, supportive, and joyful community church open to all people.
Our Mission
We are a people of God seeking to proclaim and live out the Good News of Jesus Christ. We are called by God through the Holy Spirit to serve as a spiritual center for our community:
Nurturing spiritual growth and renewal;
Providing a sanctuary in a fast-paced world;
Reaching out and sharing Christ with all;
Passing on our faith to the next generation;
Serving God through the growth of mission outreach.
Our Core Ministries
We live out our mission and calling through these four core ministry areas:
Spirit-Filled Worship
Intentional Faith Development
Transformational Mission and Service
Extra-mile Hospitality / Digital Connections
Our Denomination
We are a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in the Hudson River Presbytery.
Presbyterians affirm that God comes to us with grace and love in the person of Jesus Christ, who lived, died, and rose for us so that we might have eternal and abundant life in him. As Christ’s disciples, called to ministry in his name, we seek to continue his mission of teaching the truth, feeding the hungry, healing the broken, and welcoming strangers. God sends the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, giving us the energy, intelligence, imagination, and love to be Christ’s faithful disciples in the world.
The unity of believers in Christ is reflected in the rich diversity of the Church’s membership. In Christ, by the power of the Spirit, God unites persons through baptism regardless of race, ethnicity, age, sex, disability, geography, or theological conviction. There is therefore no place in the life of the Church for discrimination against any person. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) shall guarantee full participation and representation in its worship, governance, and emerging life to all persons or groups within its membership.
More than two million people call the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) their spiritual home. Worshiping in 10,000 Presbyterian congregations throughout the United States, they engage the communities in which they live and serve with God’s love.
Our History
Pleasantville Presbyterian Church was organized by thirteen men and women on January 18, 1880. Services were held for a time in Sunset Hall, over John Thorn's livery stable on Wheeler Avenue. The Cornerstone of our church was laid on November 2, 1880, on property that was part of a farm owned by D.D. Earle. The building was first used for public worship on July 17, 1881. The Church has been rebuilt and enlarged three times. In 1923, the orientation of the sanctuary went from the eastern side of the building to the present -day southern side. We especially hope that you love our stained glass window as much as we do. Be sure to notice how beautiful it looks from the inside!
